Liberated
& Rooted

A 6-day retreat in Puerto Rico for equity-driven women of color leaders ready to reconnect to themselves beyond survival, performance, and the systems they've spent their lives holding together.

This retreat is for you if

You've spent years holding everything together: your team, your community, your family, your organization. And somewhere along the way, you lost connection to yourself.

You're likely:

  • Deeply aware of the systems shaping your life and work

  • Craving more freedom, joy, softness, and spaciousness

  • Tired of constantly performing competence and resilience

  • Questioning whether your life has become entirely built around responsibility

  • Longing for community with women who understand your experience without needing it explained

You may not fully know what comes next yet. But you do know that something needs to shift.

What if, for 6 whole days, you didn't have to perform?

Imagine waking up slowly in a beautiful private villa surrounded by ocean air, warm sun, and women who simply get it.

  • Slow barefoot mornings.

  • Long dinners filled with laughter and honesty.

  • Fresh meals, ocean swims, candlelit conversations,

  • And moments where you realize how long it's been since your body actually relaxed.

Somewhere in that spaciousness, you begin reconnecting to your desires, creativity, and intuition. Not a life where you survive better; a life that actually feels like home.

"We operate in systems where we have to hold our breath just to navigate them. These retreats are an opportunity to exhale, in a safe space with like-minded people where you can be your full, authentic self. Including all the sides we tend to hide in dominant culture."

— Sara Hassan, Professor, Liberal Studies, Humber College

"If you're looking to find solidarity, safety, vulnerability, and a whole lot of trust, this is it. A space where you don't have to justify what you believe or prove that what you experience is real."

— Atifa Hasham, Gender Equity Specialist

More than rest.

Liberated & Rooted is hosted by Miriam Buttu and created specifically for equity-driven women of color leaders.

This is not a business retreat or mastermind. There’s no networking pressure and no "optimize your life" energy.

And yet, for many women, this becomes the beginning of imagining a different way of living and working entirely.

Because when you finally slow down enough to hear yourself clearly, you begin noticing what's no longer sustainable, what you've outgrown, what you actually want, and what kind of life you may be ready to build next.

From a place of alignment, not urgency.

Why Puerto Rico

For many of us navigating systems shaped by colonialism, extraction, and overwork, there is something deeply meaningful about gathering in a place that holds both immense beauty and complex history.

Puerto Rico is not a neutral backdrop. It is a place still living under colonial rule, and a place with vibrant, ongoing resistance movements that refuse to let that be the whole story. As part of our time together we will learn about that history and the communities actively fighting for sovereignty today. That struggle is not unfamiliar to us. It echoes what communities are living in Canada, in the US, in Palestine, and across the world.

We come to rest, to reconnect, and to remember that our liberation is part of something much larger.

Colorful building on a street corner with pastel green, yellow, blue, and pink facades, featuring wrought iron balconies, open window shutters, and a sign that reads 'Calle de la Luna.' The Puerto Rican flag is flying on top of the building. The street has a yellow curb and a stop sign.

The rhythm of our days

Slow mornings. Shared meals. Ocean and nature experiences. Guided reflection. Movement and embodied practices. Meaningful conversation. Play, joy, and laughter. Spacious free time for rest and integration.

Some moments will be guided. Others intentionally left open.

This retreat is about creating enough space to hear yourself again.

Meet your host, Miriam Buttu

I'm a Palestinian woman, former nonprofit executive, business coach, and facilitator with over 20 years creating human-centered spaces rooted in justice, identity, leadership, and liberation.

Liberated & Rooted was born from noticing the same thing over and over: brilliant, caring, deeply capable women had become disconnected from themselves. The problem was never capacity. It was the systems rewarding over-functioning and constant output.

This retreat is an invitation to return to yourself, and to each other.
